Say goodbye to the “dewy” foundations of yesteryear! As a girl with oily skin, I couldn’t be happier. Dewy makeup is a complete nightmare for us oily girls. It feels sticky to the touch all day long, now matter how many oil absorbent products you have in your arsenal! The newest makeup craze for 2013 is matte makeup. Yes, I said it. MATTE MAKEUP! Truly, an oily skinned girl’s dream.
Here is a list of some matte makeup for oily skin that I currently use, or would like to try:
Make Up For Ever Mattifying Foundation 36.00 at Sephora
NYX Cosmetics Matte Makeup Finishing Spray 7.99 at Ulta
Mattify! Cosmetics ULTRA Powder for Oily Skin 12.99 at Mattify Cosmetics Website
Stila Stay All Day Foundation 44.00 at Stila Cosmetics Website
Dinair Matte Waterproof Airbrush Foundation 12.99 – 24.99 at Dinair Website
MAC Matte Mattifying Cream 21.00 at MAC Website
I’ve never heard of the NYX or MAC mattifying products – these look like must try items. I see a review in my future. Am wondering if the NYX spray will turn any makeup matte. That would be amazing!
So how do you apply matte makeup?
Here’s how in 3 easy steps:
1) The secret to long lasting makeup is a good base!
If you have super oily skin like myself, it’s important to apply a good base primer first.
My standby is the Mattify Cosmetics ULTRA Powder, because I’ve hardly suffered any breakouts since I started using it under my foundation. It also absorbs loads of oil, so my makeup stays matte for hours. I steer clear of most gel or cream primers because every single one seems to contain silicone. That stuff is the equivalent of putting glue on your skin.
I really want to try using the MAC Matte Mattifying Cream first, then the Mattify ULTRA Powder so I can see if super-crazy-oil-absorption takes place. Once I purchase the MAC product and test it out, I’ll post results!
2) After applying your base primer, select a good matte foundation.
These are notoriously difficult to find. I don’t think most companies realize just how many women struggle with oily skin! Some expensive name-brands like the ones listed above to have matte makeup, but finding a drugstore brand is almost impossible. The Revlon Colorstay Makeup for Oily Skin and Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse are the only two that stayed even semi-matte on my skin. I’m a sucker for liquid foundation, because it provides good coverage and stays on longer than mineral powder or heavy pressed powder. So, I’m forced to stay with expensive name brands.
My latest discovery is the Dinair Airbrush Foundation, which I apply with my finger tips instead of the complicated spray gun. This by far gives me the longest lasting results of any liquid foundation I’ve used, plus it feels light as air. You can check out my review of the Dinair Foundation here.
3) After applying foundation, use a setting powder for a flawless matte finish.
I use the Mattify ULTRA Powder again here (same one I use for a primer) because it’s a completely clear powder that gives me a freshly applied makeup look for hours. I’m not a big fan of colored powder because it feels so heavy. If you have oily skin, you already know that the oil can feel like a 10 lb weight on your face by day’s end. The Mattify ULTRA keeps everything set into place while feeling light, and nobody can even tell you’re wearing it. It’s like a ghost oil absorber!
Pictures speak a thousand words…
So here are some samples of matte makeup for oily skin.
I’m always amazed at how flawless the skin looks when matte makeup is used! The current Rockabilly / Pinup-Girl Trend requires perfect matte makeup.
I’ve been seeing this picture around Pinterest a lot lately, but can never seem to find its source other than an Instrigram pic. Don’t know who she is, but this girl knows how to rock a matte makeup look. SO. DARN. CUTE.
Another cute Rockabilly look:
Here’s a great matte makeup look for a night out. I’m lovin’ the sparkly eye makeup paired with nude lip and matte complexion.
And this one is a good daytime look. Purple eye liner breaks up the monotony of the matte makeup and nude lip.
